Home Inspection


Home Inspection is a CE (Continuing Education) Course that has been approved by the Alabama Real Estate Commission and after completion, 6-hours of CE credits are issued as elective credits toward the total 15-hours required to renew salesperson or broker license every two year period.

This is a basic course in Home Inspection. The course covers the requirements of property inspection and the responsibilities of licensed inspectors; the basic fundamentals of the exterior components of real property; the components of interior housing construction; red flags associated with environmental hazards; and the procedure for inspecting heating and cooling systems.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Indicate the kinds of things a home inspector must be knowledgable about.
  • List the typical items examined by a home inspector on the property and on the exterior physical structure of a house.
  • Discuss what signs to look for during a roof inspection that would indicate a problem.
  • Recognize the kinds of exterior siding that can be found on a home.
  • Define what is the meaning of R-value in terms of insulation required in a home.
  • Know what to look for when inspecting stairways, patios, porches, fireplaces, chimneys, and woodstoves.
  • Describe different types of heating and AC systems.
  • Explain common problem areas often found in kitchens.
  • Recoginze the basic plumbing issues associated with hot water heaters, drains, septic systems, and water wells.
  • Understand the need for inspection of electrical wiring, especially in older residential homes.
  • Understand what Mold is, how to prevent it, and how to get rid of it.
  • Learn the health effects of Mold exposure.
  • Recognize the the steps licensees can take to reduce toxic mold liability.
  • Be able to explain the provisions of the Melina Bill.

  • We encourage online participation to ensure a more complete understanding of the subject matter.
  • Provide group discussion and quizzes; then the correct answers are given to ensure the student retains the proper knowledge.
  • Provide quiz builders to allow the student to realize their knowledge base of the topic and to peak their interest.
  • Picture and charactures are used to capture attention, create more excitement and enthusiasm, and make the learning process more retainable.
  • Books, examples, illustrations, and pertinent information are given to each student.
  • Web links to various sites are provided to enhance possible knowledge dealing with specific topics.
  • Web links to editorials provide additional pertinent information.
